Cohen Receives Near Perfect Voting Record on LCV Scorecard
Friday, 18 February 2011 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) was recognized by the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) for having a near perfect voting record on national environmental issues in 2010. The Congressman was one of three Tennessee Representatives to score a 90 percent or above. “If we are going to improve the air we breathe, the water we drink and preserve our environment for future generations, we must treat our planet with the care it deserves,” said Congressman Cohen. “We must combat the pollution that destroys our lungs and ruins our planet. Many great benefits could come from our efforts to maintain clean water and air. They will enable us to create alternative sources of energy that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, lower energy costs for American families and small businesses, and establish a clean energy economy that will help create green jobs across the country.”
In the 111th Congress, Congressman Cohen authored the 10 Million Solar Roofs and 10 Million Gallons of Solar Water Heating Act. The measure would provide valuable cash rebates for the creation of 10 million small power plants located on the roofs of American homes and businesses throughout the country. The legislation would also create an estimated 1.35 million direct and indirect jobs, lower energy costs, strengthen the economy, and put America on the path to energy independence.
The League of Conservation Voters is a national non-profit organization that works to turn environmental values into national priorities. Their aim is to secure the environmental future of our planet.

Cohen Announces $6.7 Million for Flooding and Storm Damage in Memphis and Shelby County
Friday, 11 February 2011 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded Memphis $4,232,594 for expenses related to disaster relief, long-term recovery, and infrastructure, housing and economic revitalization for the storm that took place in May 2010. Shelby County will receive $2,526,642. “Memphians and Tennesseans still need help recovering from the storm in May 2010,” said Congressman Cohen. “These new federal funds will go a long way toward helping Memphis and Shelby County recover from the severe storms, flooding, straight-line winds and tornadoes we experienced.”
The funds were made available through HUD’s Community Development Block Grant–Disaster Recovery program, which was funded via the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2010 that Congressman Cohen supported.
Last May, Congressman Cohen contacted the Federal Emergency Management Agency to determine when and how the federal government could step in to help Memphis and Shelby County. He joined with Congressmen Jim Cooper, Lincoln Davis and Marsha Blackburn in issuing a letter to urge the Governor to request a Preliminary Damage Assessment – a first step that had to take place before asking for a Presidential Disaster Declaration.
Once the Governor requested federal help, Congressman Cohen joined the Congressmen and Senators from Tennessee to ask President Obama to approve the request for disaster relief as quickly as possible, which he did.
Congressman Cohen toured neighborhoods to see the damage firsthand and will continue to push the federal government to do everything possible for as much federal help as possible for the 9th District.
