Each year we all gather around the tv to watch the State of the Union. It’s an exciting time! It's the beginning of the year and while we are anxious to see what the leader of the free world has in store for us, we should also be thinking about ways in which we can be the ultimate citizens! All politics aside, this is a worthwhile mission for becoming a better you! By no means was this a typical State of the Union address. According to Yahoo Politics, the White House deemed it as “untraditional,” an opportunity to move beyond the usual laundry list of policy proposals and ambitions toward a broader consideration of the president’s legacy and the country’s direction." Rather we realize it or not, we aid in this positive direction. As a result, I've curated a custom State of the "You"ion development plan! It is based upon President Obama's actual address and a few tips to apply to your own life. Read the full text of #POTUS'S address here. State of the Union: But for my final address to this chamber, I don’t want to talk just about the next year. I want to focus on the next five years, ten years, and beyond. State of the "You"ion: Do you have a plan in place for your future? This is the first step to head in any direction. It may sound silly, but a simple statement of "in 5 years, I see myself doing_______” goes a long way. P.S. time will pass you by regardless, so embark on your journey today! State of the Union: America has been through big changes before — wars and depression, the influx of immigrants, workers fighting for a fair deal, and movements to expand civil rights. Each time, there have been those who told us to fear the future; who claimed we could slam the brakes on change, promising to restore past glory if we just got some group or idea that was threatening America under control. And each time, we overcame those fears. State of the "You"ion: You will face some tough times. You will be told, if not already, to settle. Don’t let fear instilled in you by yourself or others cloud your judgement. Create a contingency plan. Here are a few options for that plan: get a mentor, read a motivational book, attend an empowerment conference. Nelson Mandela once said, “It seems impossible until it’s done.” Here are a few book suggestions to help you with a plan: "What I Know for Sure" by Oprah and "Thrive" by Arianna Huffington. State of the Union: That’s the America I know. That’s the country we love. Clear-eyed. Big-hearted. Optimistic that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. That’s what makes me so hopeful about our future. Because of you. I believe in you. That’s why I stand here confident that the State of our Union is strong. State of the "You"ion: Just four years ago, on May 5, 2012, the #POTUS tweeted the following: Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. If you are a Friday Night Lights Fan, you know that that’s exactly where this phrase was derived! Tuesday night, he reiterated this. Take it into account in your own life and see what happens! You can't lose with this motto. So, cue the infamous football movie's soundtrack. The time is now to continue improving our State of the Union, your State of the You"ion". As a citizen of the United States, it is your prerogative to be the best you that you can be! Believe in yourself!
